El virus del Zika es una infección viral que se transmite principalmente por picaduras de mosquitos, que ocurre sobre todo en áreas tropicales y subtropicales del mundo. La mayoría de las personas infectadas con el virus del Zika no presentan signos ni síntomas. Algunas personas tienen fiebre leve, sarpullido y dolor muscular.
La viruela mayor se caracteriza por un período de incubación de entre 10 y 12 días (intervalo de entre 7 y 17 días), tras el cual aparece un período prodrómico de 2 a 3 días con fiebre, cefalea, lumbalgia y malestar general extremo. En ocasiones, el paciente presenta dolor abdominal intenso y vómitos. Después del prodromo, aparecen lesiones maculopapulares sobre la mucosa bucofaríngea, la cara y los brazos, que se disemina poco tiempo después al tronco y las piernas.
Es una enfermedad infecciosa causada por un agente transmisible, el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH). En ausencia de tratamiento efectivo, el VIH produce un estado de inmunodeficiencia progresiva que es debida fundamentalmente a una disminución de los linfocitos T CD4. Esto predispone al paciente a padecer infecciones y tumores cuya frecuencia y gravedad guardan relación con el recuento de linfocitos T CD4 que quedan en la sangre. Desde el punto de vista clínico, el paciente puede estar completamente asintomático (los denominados portadores del VIH, con infección pero sin manifestaciones), padecer infecciones de carácter leve (pacientes sintomáticos) o padecer infecciones y tumores graves, denominados oportunistas. Este último estadio es el conocido como síndrome de inmunodeficiencia adquirida (SIDA).
