La viruela del mono es una enfermedad viral que afecta a los primates, incluyendo a los seres humanos. La infección es causada por el virus de la viruela del mono, perteneciente a la familia Poxviridae. En este artículo, abordaremos los distintos aspectos de la viruela del mono, desde su definición hasta su prevención.

La viruela mayor se caracteriza por un período de incubación de entre 10 y 12 días (intervalo de entre 7 y 17 días), tras el cual aparece un período prodrómico de 2 a 3 días con fiebre, cefalea, lumbalgia y malestar general extremo. En ocasiones, el paciente presenta dolor abdominal intenso y vómitos. Después del prodromo, aparecen lesiones maculopapulares sobre la mucosa bucofaríngea, la cara y los brazos, que se disemina poco tiempo después al tronco y las piernas.
